Throughout history people have questioned election. The question is whether people are predestined to be called to heaven and can not reject the Holy Spirit’s calling such as a John Calvin. Or do we have the free will to accept or deny the Holy Spirit’s calling into our lives such as James Arminius believed. Or is it something else just as Karl Barth or Augustine believed in. But for the purpose of this paper we will look at Calvinism and Arminius viewpoints and touch on the view points of other theologians throughout history to come up with an accurate conclusion of which of the two main theological ideas is most likely the case of election. The Old Testam ent election mainly involved the nation of Israel. And when he chose the nation of Israel it almost seemed in a way that God chose the nation because he could. In Genesis God chose Abram later named Abraham to become a mighty nation from his seed and be a blessing to all nations (Genesis 18). And through that seed of Abraham in Deuteronomy chose Israel nation even though they where hard hearted often (Deut 9:6). But there are other examples outside the nation of Israel. Most notably Cyrus, Cyrus was chosen to rebuild the temple. God even revealed Himself to Cyrus but there is no evidence to suggest that Cyrus was in fact regenerated So it seems that the Old Testament does not support the concept that personal salvation is a result of individual election. In the New Testament there are verses on election and both sides to support their case. For example in Romans 8 it seems like that predestination is conformed when it mentions that we as believers would be predestined to be in Jesu s image. ‘To His Coy Mistress’ Is a love poem by Andrew Marvel. The poem is ‘carpe diem’ which translates to seize the day, this means the poem does not take its time its blunt and straight to the point. The poem contains a thesis, antithesis and synthesis, the main argument points of the poem. The poem is split into three stanza’s which are used to persuade the woman to give up her virginity before her beauty dies. It is a conventional poem for its time in the 17th century. There are many similarities and differences between the two poems. Both poems are love poems aimed at women, and both are trying to persuade. Both poems are poems of their times but could have different meanings due to being set in the 16th and 17th centaury’s. Separately the groups interacted, group norms were followed, they joked and had secret codes. The groups were set against each ot her in competition and within their own groups co-operation and loyalty were heightened but hostility, aggression and prejudiced was seen between the groups. Observing Sheriffs study we see positively how group members found a sense of belonging in their own group and how loyalty and co. Operation were heightened by competition. Negatively we see their behavior changing when clashing against their out group becoming hostile, aggressive and prejudiced. Prejudice against our out group bolsters self-esteem as it allows us to see other groups as interior. We feel safe and part of our in group but through group pressure we may conform to the rest of the group and the sense of identity we gained we could start to lose as we become more influenced by the rest of the group.
